Philadelphia is probably the most compact, walkable major city in the United States, just as it was in 1776. Even on a random walk, you'll be fascinated by the physical illustration of the progress of the centuries, and the many unexpected juxtapositions between past and present. Keep in mind that the nearer you are to the Delaware, the older (and smaller) the buildings are likely to be. The walking tours mapped out below are specifically designed to cover the most worthwhile attractions. Note: It is important that you purchase tickets for Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Bishop White House, and Todd House (all on Tour 1) at the Independence Visitors Center. You will not be able to purchase tickets at the attractions themselves.
